Introduction

A Yard Shunter is someone who is trained to move large vehicles safely around their worksite, within the company’s premises or other areas of off road parking that would be closed to the public. Yard Shunters will be trained to ensure they minimise the risks of accidents and workplace collisions.

Yard Shunters will be trained to understand the latest recommended HSE code of signals ensuring they are able to safely manoeuvre large vehicles around their site.

Training will take place on site at the customer’s premises.

This course is suitable for those moving trailers or large goods vehicles within their site. Training will also cover approved hand signals to assist reversing operations.

What will be covered?

Course Content

While this list is not exhaustive, here are some key topics covered during the training.

Upon successfully completing the course, trainees will receive an accredited or in-house certificate valid for three years. A refresher course is recommended every three years to maintain compliance and safety standards.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Approved Code of Practice (ACOP)

Operator safety and observation, including pre-operational checks

Refuelling procedures

Defect reporting procedures

Introduction to the tractor unit and trailer

Coupling/uncoupling

Reversing

Banksman signals

Loading docks

Theory test
