Introduction

Although battery care is often included in basic training, we’ve found that some operators overlook the importance of proper and thorough battery maintenance.

Batteries require careful handling during the charging process and there are many hazards to be aware of regarding the maintenance of the battery. In this session, trainees will gain a deeper understanding of the safety precautions that must be followed when working near traction batteries.

By following correct procedures and understanding the risks, employees can not only extend the lifespan of the batteries but also reduce hazards during the charging process. This includes recognising the dangers posed by hydrogen gas released during charging.

What will be covered?

Course Content

While this list is not exhaustive, here are some key topics covered during the training.

Upon successfully completing the course, trainees will receive an accredited or in-house certificate valid for three years. A refresher course is recommended every three years to maintain compliance and safety standards.

Course introduction and induction

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Approved Code of Practice (ACOP)

PPE

Entering the battery charging area

Checking cables for wear and damage

Signage

Topping up with demineralised water

Spills and leaks

Taking specific gravity readings

Removing and replacing the battery (if applicable)
